Gold and Land : the Two Great Detrimental Forces of Indian Economy !

Traditionally Indian women are irrationally attracted to the yellow metal. Gold is such a compulsive passion and addiction for most of them.

No logic or common sense go into their head when it comes to possessing gold. They are too happy if their near and dear ones spend all their incomes to buy gold ornaments or anything that is made of this shining metal which is other wise of little value to man kind.

They may tell hundred and one arguments in favour of their love for gold.

Any way the World Gold Council (WGC) members should be the happiest lot in this scenario and they are bound to do all they can to keep the Indian women stick to their traditional gold fancy for generations ! This group who controls the 20 odd gold mines of the world need to sell out their produce at the highest profits. A product that otherwise does not have any intrinsic value with regard to its usefulness !

So they keep doing all that is in their arsenal to keep the prices of gold keep rising over the years, though marginally with quantum jumps once every decade !

Total production of gold in the world is to the order of about 2500 metric tonnes per annum.[Source]

Out of the total world production, India imports nearly half. That means all the gold that gets mined and processed gets distributed to the millions of Indian house holds through the hundreds of jewellery shops of India, the only progressing business in India in the recent times.

India spends the major part of its foreign exchange, the hard earned money of Indian exporters and the Indian dollar workers, to import arms, petroleum and gold. Out of which the first and second get fired up and the gold becomes invisible, once it goes into the custody of the Indian women.

Indian women might tell that gold is their safest guarantee to safeguard against future financial difficulties. But in reality even when they actually try to use their gold for ensuring a financial problem, their gold would make them face more problems rather than save them from it. That is because their reluctance to sell it even when there is a crisis. They prefer to take loans pledging their gold at very high interest rates creating a situation for a bigger loss for them or their family.

Imagine the gold that has cumulatively sunk into the Indian house holds all these years !

In this context listen to what this economist warns : The collective obsession of 1.2 billion people with gold can play havoc in the economy unless govt draws up a plan !

Yes, indeed this maddening obsession is one of the reasons India remains as a poor nation. It is difficult to understand this for most people. How can you consider some one possessing half the gold of the world poor ?

But remember ! Gold is not going to get you food, water, education, health or jobs !

Gold ornaments are not going to make any women look attractive also. Those wearing those just as the brides of south India, in reality look ugly ! ( Excuse me for using that word so blatantly !)

Anything in excess is going to  burst after some time. Those who madly spend their money to buy and hoard gold should remember that.

Another facet of Indian economy is the illogical pricing of land. This tendency gained momentum in the recent past.

Land is not yet a scarce natural resource in India. Vast tracks of land are lying vacant without any useful economic activities.

Some people are using land as a unit of hoardable wealth just like gold. This tendency has made all other necessities of life such as housing, education, hospital care, roads and other infrastructure becoming unaffordable and with negative returns on investment.

When India became an independent republic, the visionary leaders had maintained some controls on gold and land. Gold controls and land ceiling acts and regulations were part of that visionary thinking.

As of now, it seems that the Indian leadership has purposefully decided to be vision less with regard to gold and land, the two detrimental forces of economic development !

Detrimental when dealt without vision !

Give a thought to this,  dear ladies and leaders !

Air India : Sad Story of A Great Legacy of India !

It was the Indian business group of the Tatas who brought India to the aviation map of the world by starting the Tata Airlines way back in 1932 during the pre-independence era of the British Raj. Though this was started as a air mail service initially, it got transformed in to a full fledged public limited company named Air India way back in 1946.

Post independence, the political leaders with the socialistic mindset propagating the mixed economy culture went on with their agenda of nationalising large private enterprises such as aviation, banking etc. Thus the national carriers known as the Air India and the Indian Airlines came into existence some time in 1953 with the Government of India gradually taking control of the Tata owned Air India and bifurcating its international and domestic air services. These two carriers remained as the leading air service operators in the Indian sub continent ever since for nearly half a century thereafter as a government owned monopoly.

This long period made tremendous changes in the attitudes of the thousands of employees of the company. They had all the privileges and authority and they never considered themselves as service providers to the millions of travelling customers. Most of them acted as bull dozing government representatives enjoying too many perks and privileges. They considered their job as a kind of favor that they are doing for the underprivileged citizens rather  than courteously treating the latter as their bread providers !

This government owned aviation group  in the recent years has undergone cosmetic name changes and changes in their logos due to managerial compulsions on account of competition and cuts in budgetary supports.  They are no more the market leaders. Private airlines who are capable of offering better customer service at much lower costs have become a reality in India. For these private airline companies, the threat was only the unpredictable government policies. But they had the advantage of flexible internal management which offered dynamic and faster decision making in a fluctuating economy as compared to their government owned aviation company.

The government of India, in the past few years, seems to be confused. It is not clear whether they actually want their own airline company to operate efficiently together with the new private airlines or they want to use one against the other for short term settlement of whimsical agendas !

In the Nineties, the Indian government under Dr Manmohan Singh as the Finance Minister accepted the economic liberalisation policies of WTO and decided to forgo the socialistic frame work of policies that determined governmental actions previously. However, unlike in the earlier years, the Indian government no longer enjoyed absolute majority to push through major policy decisions the way they liked.

The effect was a half hearted approach which caused India to proceed as if rudderless creating confusions and complexities in the minds of all.

The present day India is in that situation.

This confusion is making India appear as a nation of corrupt people and leaders. The law enforcing agencies , the bureaucrats, the courts, the media and the public  are all confused.

No one seems to know what is right or what is wrong.

Some thing that is thought as the rightful thing is turning out to be the most sinful thing. Allegations of graft, favoritism and ill gotten wealth are causing the present day India stink !

Public sector undertaking are now manned by people with no proper briefing or policy directions. Are they there to destroy their organizations cunningly or manage them properly for the benefit of the common citizen ? They are not sure ! There are no clear cut laws, guidelines or policies.

One administrative order contradicts scores of other such orders.

What way the government companies are different from the private companies ?

How to know ? Who is there to guide ?

In this kind of a situation, those in India are bound to experience harsh experiences some time or the other. If they ever land into such problems due to their bad luck, it may not be easy for them to get out of the mess so easily. It can happen to both Indians or foreigners in the Indian soil !

Like what has happened yesterday (19th October 2012) with the Air India Express passengers travelling from Abu Dhabi to Thiruvananthapuram ! Expressing their anger over the extremely poor service the government owned air service company provided caused some of them to be branded as hijacking terrorists ! If a case is ever registered in the Indian courts, those who find their names included in the FIR are going face what is known as the ' Indian music ' for the rest of their lives ! It is the music with no composers !

Let me narrate some of my personal experiences with this airline company [I do not know which name I should use to refer to this company!] some time ago.

Once me and my family reached Delhi from Raipur for our onward travel by the same airline. At Delhi, we were in the long Q in front of the check in counters of this airline. A lady in her late forties with a grave face was managing the counter. She took my ticket and like an ever suspicious police officer quickly found out a spelling mistake in the ticket and my ID card. It was a harmless spelling error their own office made. She made it an issue and declared that we cannot travel. I showed our boarding pass counterfoils that they issued for our travel in the previous segment of our travel with the same silly typographical error. But she was not budging ! The travellers behind us were becoming impatient and the line length was increasing ! Imagine our situation by taking tickets in this airline by paying through our noses! The growing crowd caused some senior fellow from the company to the counter. He declared that there was no problem with that spelling error and she should issue the boarding passes. But the lady did not obey his decision. She kept on arguing and finally her superior himself issued the boarding passes. Imagine the commotion this one lower level employee created !

Yet on another occasion I was on a flight from Delhi to Raipur via Nagpur. At Nagpur, the pilot refused to fly us to Raipur citing some silly technical reasons. A well known politician and an ex Chief Minister of the Madhya Pradesh state too was a passenger who got stranded at Nagpur. After 5 long hours of arguments and counter arguments the airline finally arranged a shabby bus for taking the stranded passengers to Raipur by road.

This kind of experiences from this airline have been a very normal thing for this airline. The ground staff of this company many times behave like ruffian police officers in white uniform. At times I have observed them too liberal to entertain the passengers in some hotels of their choice incurring huge expenditure.

When some of the private airline companies adopted the flexible airfare policy which made air travel an affordable one for the average Indian, it was this government airline's top management with due support from their political bosses that played such nasty games which forced such customer friendly companies to wind up their operations !

Through out its history, this government airline company have been charging the highest price for its air tickets. Since the majority of the air travellers who travel by this air line are doing so only because they have no other choice are paying such high prices. They keep cursing this  company , its employees and its management every time they have to shell out huge sums for such hopeless service ! The government many time forces its officers and staff to travel by this airline by paying high charges. Effectively this amounts to transfer of government money from one department to the other !

What they (the Indian public) fail to understand is the millions of loss this company keep on making even after they charge the highest prices in the world ! Coupled with it the public hear the news about the pilots of this government airline taking the highest and unimaginable salaries and that too some of the privileged ones without doing any flying at all !

Here the government has to be decisive. They should clear their mind on the future course firmly without dilly dallying on the issue. If they cannot manage it well, then decide to privatise it as early as possible. It should be remembered that the government had done such privatising earlier. If the huge number of employees are what prevents privatisation, close it down permanently and re-appoint those who are useful with new terms and conditions !

But the moot question is the not privatisation or nationalisation ! It is the question of having proper policies and laws. Only the law makers can do it !

But if the law makers themselves do not have the competency to do the work they are entrusted with then no one can save India. Only the public can do it. For that the public have to think in unison. They should learn the fundamentals of choosing their representatives who can do good for them !

If they cannot do it, then perhaps democracy is a costly luxury for them.

That was what a general of a neighboring country of Indian root declared some years ago !

Whatever be it, the story of Air India alias Indian alias Air India Express alias Indian Airlines is a sad story for all in India !

Do Not Give Any Advice Unless Earnestly Asked !

Do not give any advice to any one unless he or she seriously request for the same !

My guide book  reiterates this rule many times. The presumption here is that you know for sure what you are advising ! There are people who keep giving false advices. This rule is not for them !
Unlike many others, God has given me a very special ability .

I can analyze certain situations, especially managerial ones, better than many others and come to certain  decisions which would be of the overall benefit to the organization in the long run.

Quite often my conclusions used to be much different from my peers and seniors and I used to be the odd man in the lot that the others being in majority usually go against what I advised. In the end it has been seen that they met with noticeable failures !

Later, as they had been forewarned, they quite often feel some kind of awkward guilt that for most of them it would be difficult to face me after they had met with such failures.

At that time I did not realize the golden rule  that I mentioned in the beginning of this blog !

I used to give my advice freely without any one seriously desiring that from me. It was difficult for me to restrain myself when I perceive some one known to me going to make some serious error.

More than a decade ago, I had an old professional friend who used to be the chairman cum MD of a very prospering engineering company. He used to discuss many things concerning his company's management with me. I was also known to many of the top key personnel of his company. This helped me to gain an overall bird's eye view of his company and its organizational management.

Then the company appointed a new professional man as one of its GMs. I got opportunity to interact with this person too. Soon this person became the closest associate of the CMD because he was too good a sycophant ! He knew the art of buttering too well as compared to all others in this company.

Soon this person began to exploit his closeness to the CMD for his own benefits and causing much harm to the company. The CMD by this time was totally infatuated by this clever man that he only believed him and none other in his company.

Serious problems were developing for the company. At this point of time some other senior members of the management of the company thought it fit to discuss this problem with an outsider like me because they knew of my friendship with their CMD.

Analyzing the situation from the various pieces of information I came to the conclusion that the new GM was doing things to ruin this company and if continued unchecked this company would soon face bankruptcy.

So I decided to advise my friend and CMD of this company without him asking for my advice.

I remember talking to him over phone for nearly an hour explaining the situations and trying to make him understand the ulterior motives of his new GM.

But that was an unsolicited advice. He listened to me but was unwilling to take my advice.

In another one year time this company actually went to bankruptcy. It went out of all business for all practical purposes.

Later at some point of time, I remember receiving a call from this old man who managed his company successfully for so many years.

Now his company was no more in active business !

He profusely apologized to me for not heeding to my advice more than an year ago. Finally he concluded that it is God's wish that all these things happened. God had made his brains blocked that he could not accept the good advice from me ! What a great logic !

In reality he is not alone in making such conclusions. The majority of people conclude this way. They make God responsible for their failures in life on account of not proceeding on certain wise path !

My guide book says that it is not like that. It categorically says God is not involved with the day to day decision making of human beings.

I believe it.

God is not responsible for your human errors and misdeeds. If you have erred, that means you have not used your God given wisdom and intelligence properly !

What God has given is your free-will ! He will not reduce that gift by interfering with your decisions !

For using your free will wisely you have to soften your strong head a bit to allow the wisdom thoughts to be given some weightage.

Now for such head strong people, it is not an easy thing to accept any one's advice ! So, even if they chance to hear good advices, they most likely reject it.

For requesting advice from others you have to be humble. Your head potential should be a little lower for the advices to flow to your brains !

Then only you are in a position to process the good advice for your benefit.

Did you get now why my guide book gives the golden rule as above ?

Learn to live a humble life for making your life a success !

That is a free advice and you have not asked it. I should not have given it.

But then, those of you who are seeking earnestly only would find this advice !

So I am complying with the golden rule !

Treasures,Talents and the PPM Process !

Some years ago I read a story of a South Indian man who owned a small dhaba [a type of cheap motel that is commonly found in India] on a high way connecting Mumbai and Bangalore.

I do not know the truth in this story. Yet it is believed to be a true story.

One day a fakir came to his dhaba and had some snacks. But he did not have the money to pay the shop owner. Instead, he took out a transparent looking stone from his dirty pyjama pocket  and offered it to the shop owner.

The shop owner understood that this fakir did not have any money.  Anyway he accepted that stone instead. He thought that the fakir might have collected that stone from somewhere while on his routine errands for alms in the country side.

He examined the stone in his hands for some time and decided that it is a good paper weight for his dilapidated cash counter table.

From that day on, the stone was on this dhaba owner's cash table as a raw ornamental show piece and a paper weight. Customers, mainly truck drivers and other high way passengers looked at the odd looking stone curiously, many examining it by taking it in their hands and feeling its smoothness and transparency.

The stone was on his table always, day and night. He didnot feel it as some thing valuable to be protected or kept in safe custody.

Then one day, two jewel traders from Mumbai accidentally stopped their Mercedez car in front of his dhaba for some tea. While making their payments for the tea, these gentlemen too examined the stone on the cash table curiously. They asked the shop owner about its source and the man told the story honestly.

Then they asked the shop owner about their liking of the stone and their desire to have it.

The shop owner was too willing to hand over the stone to them for free. But just at that moment the gentlemen offered the shop owner one thousand rupees in return for the stone.

Suddenly the shop owner snatched the stone back from the gentlemen and put it in his drawer and flatly refused to hand it over to them at any cost !

Within seconds, the value less stone became a priceless treasure !

It was later realized that the stone was an uncut diamond of many carats. Eventually it went up and got locked inside a bank locker owned by the shop keeper. It has transformed itself to a treasure worth millions of dollars internationally.

There are certain things that we can learn from this story.

Whether it is a material thing as a diamond stone or an  piece of art or a piece of land or a talent of a person, the value of it depends on how people realize it.

You need some one who realize the value and project that value for the appreciation by others.

Picking, projecting and mentoring (PPM) is an essential process to enhance the value of treasures and talents !

Without PPM,  treasures and talents are worthless !

There could be innumerable treasures and talents in our world. But without some one to do the PPM they  all of them may not get the recognition and the value.

Those who know the art of PPM are the wealth managers of the world !

Many rich countries are rich because they know the art of PPM better than others !

My own country India is potentially rich with innumerable material treasures and talented people. But unfortunately, there are not many who could do the PPM properly.

India's riches are like the dhaba owner's paper weight stone !

Yet to be picked up, projected and mentored for full realization of value !

Do you agree with me ?

Do You Cherish to Possess a A Civilized Nature ?

For many years, I was under the impression that power corrupts only the rich and the affluent people. But keen observations later have forced me to change that perception.

I now know that power corrupts all.

If it does not, then the person concerned is either senseless or highly civilized.

' Possessing the highest power and not using that power for self aggrandizement is a mark of the highest civilization' .

This is one of the highest learning of human philosophy.

That is what my book of super mortal origin keeps reminding me !

Once I was introduced to a soldier of a paramilitary organization.

He appeared to me as a very simple and decent fellow. May be because I was a friend of his boss and there was nothing of sort at that time for him to exercise his powers on me !

But one day I saw the same person using his lathi (stick of the policemen) so inhumanly to terrorize a group of road side vendors. He was beating all who had not paid him the weekly hafta [bribe] for allowing them to carry on their business on the road side ! He was trying to exert his power and authority selectively for his own benefit on those poor fellows on whom he could do that whimsically!

Almost all people whom I have known personally as simple, good persons have shown the tendency of becoming rude and unfriendly the moment they get to some position of power. I have seen them coming back to normalcy only when they are no more in that power position. The transformation to either way has been observed as taking place almost instantaneously !

The more the power vested, the more arrogant and non-courteous the person be.

Business men are very polite with their customers. You may not find such loving persons anywhere if you happen to be a valuable customer !

But watch them how they treat their staff and employees on whom they can exert their power !

When it is the election time, have you watched our ministers and peoples' representatives ? They are so polite, loving and approachable ! But when they get their chairs of power can any one think of approaching them ?

I read yesterday about the results of a research some psychology researchers have carried out somewhere in the west.

They have found out that people occupying power positions tend to become too reserved and artificial that they do not smile back at those who are previously known to them, as a mark of friendly reciprocation. Deep in their minds they began to consider their old friends as potential competitors. So they no more like to continue with such friendships !

I had known a person who retired as a managing director of a big company. While in power he kept all his friends and acquaintances of yester years at a distance as total strangers that after retirement he became a lonely fellow eagerly desiring fellowship of others which was not forthcoming. I remember him crying sheepishly holding my hands when I touched upon that issue when I happened to meet him a year before his death.

Another old man who used to be a tough task manager with a rude face lived the rest of his retirement life virtually as an orphan. When he died, there was no one to assist his poor widow to carry out his last rites. I remember the company where he worked earlier sending some people on official duty for this purpose. He was fortunate that he lived in the vicinity of his previous organization and some of his junior colleagues in power that time acted to help out at least mechanically !

I have also noticed some other interesting things in this context.

The fellows who tend to become unfriendly with those on whom they could exercise their powers are those who got into the power position not so legitimately by using some clicks and connections. Those who get into power positions legitimately try to use their power and position for the benefit of the people and the organization. They generally recognize that their power and position is for the common good of the society and not for satisfying their own whims and fancies.

Those who get in to power by unfair means would be too much eager to please their bosses. Because they subconsciously know their incompetencies and try to cover up that by doing such acts to over please their bosses and keeping away from their colleagues and subordinates. For them bosses are like gods and others are like dogs ! Within no time they are in the grip of the 'god-dog syndrome' .

I personally feel that it is not their mistake after all. Their minds have not come to what we understand as civilized levels. Remember the universal truth statement that I reproduced above. Only those with highest civilized minds can withhold the temptation of misusing power for their own selfish pleasures !

Human nature is a mix of beastly and divine. When divine nature predominates we become civilized. Otherwise we are uncivilized savages !

In the so-called civilized societies, the number of people possessing the god-dog syndrome would be lower. I haven't got the opportunity to study or observe people of this group much. But to the extent I have observed, I think this is true.

In India, presently the god-dog syndromized people appear to be more, especially in the power positions. This is not a good sign. ( That is what I feel !)  How safe you feel when you travel in a plane piloted by two uncivilized pilots though both are technically competent and certified ?

At no time in the history of independent India we had such arrogant ministers and top officials that we have now. In the guise of security, peoples' representatives are closing the high ways and roads for hours together for their motorcade to pass displaying authority and power so shamelessly !

Never in the history of India we had government and ministers suing individuals for highlighting some of their misdeeds !

My book also tells me this : Cleverness is not a substitute for true character !

It also tells like this : High civilizations are born of the sagacious correlation of material wealth, intellectual greatness, moral worth, social cleverness  and cosmic insight.

Do you cherish to possess a civilized nature ?

If not, then perhaps we may have to wait for ages to become part of a high civilization !

If you do not belong to a high civilization, there are chances that you are praised and hanged almost instantaneously.

Holding power positions in a savage society is not at all safe !

Unfortunately those holding power positions will never read this !

I Wonder Why They Behaved Like This?

When I was a ten year old boy, I had a friend who was my classmate in my new school where I began my second innings of primary school education. The period was the mid nineteen sixties. The school was one founded by mother's family and later handed over to the Marthomite Syrian Christian Church of Kerala. At that time my uncle used to be the Headmaster of the school.

This boy hailed from a section of the society who were regarded as untouchables and his parents were farm labourers. However, at that time those things made no difference to us and we were good friends.

But then one fine morning, without any known reasons, this boy became my foe. He began to abuse me and openly declared me as his enemy. His verbal accusations and tantrums later culminated into we becoming totally strangers to each other. All my attempts of getting back to the old friendship miserably failed. We were no more in talking terms and that continued even after I left the school and hence forth.

This boy in his later years became a farm laborer himself and I remember meeting him once while he was doing some work for our family. There too he remained as if he is a total stranger to me.

I used to think about this incident a lot and even now occasionally I think about it. What was that thing that happened from my side that made me his enemy?  I remember nothing ever that happened from my side that could have possibly hurt him. Yet this thing happened!

But later I found out the reason for this incident. He was scolded for some thing by the Headmaster of the school who was my uncle. As he could not show his anger to the Headmaster, he decided to vent out his anger on me !

Years later, while I began my professional career as an engineer, there were two colleagues of mine who became very close to me. We all got married at that time and continued our friendship as close family friends.

Then one fine day, quite unexpectedly one of them began showing marked animosity to me and cut off his friendship with me. I was at a loss to understand what happened. A few months later the other friend too showed the same kind of behaviour. Here too, I could not figure out any reason !

Naturally, I had to doubt my own behavioural shortcomings that were making such things happen even without my conscious knowledge. That normally happens with people who are insane. Am I of that kind ?

So I kept pondering to know what happened. For years I could not solve the puzzle.

Then years later, quite unexpectedly, a mutual friend of ours telephoned me from the other side of the globe where he was working at that time. He asked me whether this first engineer friend was still keeping his distance from me. When I confirmed it, he told me a simple incident involving him that ultimately caused this friend some how worked out to think that I was the culprit ! Though we both laughed over phone, I was wondering on the varied nature of human beings !

Another small incident not involving me caused the other friend too deducing me as the villain cutting of his friendly relations with me.

I have reason to believe that both these friends found out their follies some time later. But then it was the guilt that made them to continue our separation that they started for no reasons earlier.

All through our prime youthful years they remained aloof from me. And we all became middle aged fellows with grown up children. Both these friends came face to face with me in some place on different occasions. They were trying to avoid me and slip away. But then I initiated the big hello ! In no time the decade old strangeness and unfriendliness melted away ! Once again we became friends ! But it is too embarrassing for both of them to initiate a talk on why they did such a thing after all !

These are simple and relatively harmless incidences and nothing of very serious nature. They should not have happened, but yet happened !

But we keep hearing much more day in and day out about the hatreds, animosities, animistic love lives, vengeance's, cruelties and crookedness of human beings !

But then life is like that !

Human beings are like that !

They keep loving and hating.

Their love can make our planet turn in to heaven.

But they prefer to hate and settle scores more often than they love!

They keep behaving like angels and demons all at the same time with their demonic behaviours that keep surfacing occasionally subduing their normal angelic behaviours!

They have a godly mind and personality within their bodies of animal origin.

God has given them the power of mind and personality to master their bodies.

But they keep letting the desires and instincts of their bodies to rule over their intelligent mind!

I keep wondering!

Do You?

My Body Is Getting Old, My Mind Is Not !

I am already a grandpa and would lead a retired life in another 2-3 years if at all I live long for such an event.

But the question is, am I getting old ?

I do not know how to answer that question.

If the definition is with respect to my body, then perhaps the answer could be in the affirmative.

But yet the real me is still that boy who existed half a century ago. When I introspect in honesty, I have not changed at all in mind.

I look at my colleagues and contemporaries to find out whether they have changed.

I find them all changed, not only in body, but also in mind !

Their bodies, I can understand, have grown old.

But what about their minds ? Their faces no more reflect the innocence of theirs when we were all in or around our teens. Some of them are big bosses, some are grandpas, some are retired. They all seem to prefer to hide their real selves by artificial gravity and maturity.

It is as if they have been told to be like that lest others may find them at odds.

My better half says that I am a serious person. Perhaps it is from my looks. She says I do not laugh.

But I know, I keep laughing or smiling always, though it might not reflect on my face often. My body perhaps does not work in unison with my mind.

Perhaps it could be the same situation with my contemporaries.

To tell you the truth, I was an adult even when I was a small boy. Perhaps I lacked certain worldly experiences and knowledge then, but my mind's outlook has not changed. It is still the same as it was then.

I used to wonder about all these.

But then, my book taught me more about the gift of personality.

The gift of personality from God.

And that is some thing that adds color to life !

And making life full of colors to enjoy perpetually and perhaps everlastingly !

When I get time, I try to comprehend the meanings of these statements from my book:

Personality is one of the unsolved mysteries of the universes.

We are able to form adequate concepts of the factors entering into the make-up of various orders and levels of personality, but we do not fully comprehend the real nature of the personality itself.

We clearly perceive the numerous factors which, when put together, constitute the vehicle for human personality, but we do not fully comprehend the nature and significance of such a finite personality.

Personality is potential in all creatures who possess a mind endowment ranging from the minimum of self-consciousness to the maximum of God-consciousness.

But mind endowment alone is not personality, neither is spirit nor physical energy. Personality is that quality and value in cosmic reality which is exclusively bestowed by God the Father upon these living systems of the associated and co-ordinated energies of matter, mind, and spirit.

Neither is personality a progressive achievement.

Personality may be material or spiritual, but there either is personality or there is no personality.

Did you get it ?

And that means I have a unique personality gifted by God and it is not changing. That could be the reason that I feel the same then and now !

The Emperor's New Clothes and the Neo-Indian Bourgeoisie !

The story of the emperor who was paraded naked in public apparently wearing the most exotic and invisible clothes made by two clever weavers was one that fascinated me for all these years after I read its abridged version in my native language Malayalam as a school boy.

The story goes some thing like this:

One day two clever fellows reach the emperor's palace posing as expert weavers of exotic clothes having some special magical qualities. They knew the art of making special clothes which are visible only to competent and intelligent people and not visible to fools. They were so excellent in their oratory skills of salesmanship that the emperor soon desired to have the dress made for him with this magical clothes.

They were appointed as the special royal weavers for making the special royal gown for the emperor and allotted a space in the palace to begin their weaving and tailoring. The clever guys shifted to the place and demanded money, gold and many such things from the palace to carry out their work and all those were duly sanctioned by the palace authorities.

The weavers soon appeared busy weaving and working with their looms and tools. But the palace authorities and the emperor himself could not see any clothes on the machines though they were all kept in action. But none of them dared to tell that lest they be branded as a fool. Instead, all preferred to praise the beauty of the clothe being made !

At last, the weavers declared that the royal gown was ready to be worn by the emperor. The emperor was duly escorted to the dressing room and the weavers acted so cleverly in making the king dress up with their new invisible dress that they supposedly created for him. All the emperor's ministers and officers were in full praise for the new dress that the emperor was supposedly wearing now even while the poor emperor was naked with no clothes on him in reality. The emperor too lacked the courage to raise his doubts in front of all others who were praising the new dress like any thing.

It was time for the emperor to make the royal parade for all his countrymen to see him in this exotic and magical dress ever made in the world.

The crowd too praised the emperor in the new beautiful gown. They talked each other praising the qualities of the new clothes of their emperor.

Then, alas, there was a little boy in the crowd who cried out loudly: ' Look Papa, our king is naked ! '

The story ends there.

The story was originally written by the Danish story writer Charles Christian Anderson as ' the Emperor's New Clothes ' in the early nineteenth century.

Anderson wrote this story to expose the hypocrisy and snobbery that he observed in his own society especially the middle class people who have been classified as the bourgeoisie. [ Let me write it phonetically as boorshwazee hereafter !]

The world has been undergoing various social class changes ever since. This class of people are the most hated ones in the economic theories and doctrines promulgated by Karl Marx and his followers.

I am not here to give an analysis of the economic or class theories of great philosophers and writers.

The mindset of people who are neither poor nor traditionally rich is a peculiar type. That is the boorshwazee ( actual english pronunciation of bourgeoisie ) mindset. Whether it is in India or elsewhere, this mindset of this middle class is more or less the same. It has been the same for ages !

If you happen to be with this boorshwazee mindset you would exactly react the way the emperor and his courtiers behaved in the Anderson story which I mentioned earlier. You can never gain the courage to tell the truth in public ! Being transformed as a boorshwazee, the first thing you loose is your honesty- honesty to your own inner consciousness ! And of course, the courage to admit the truth openly regardless of what the other boorshwazee might think !

Now let me narrate some typical manners in which the neo-Indian boorshwazee conduct their day to day affairs making their lives a secret mockery for every one including themselves.

Some clever fellows, like the clever weavers in the Anderson story, have been telling them that the so-called new age public schools which extract huge sums of money from them officially and unofficially are the ones which transform the ordinary children to the so called elite class capable of speaking foreign English and such other pseudo mannerisms that are essential for getting admission to the elite class. The clever school business men have easily fooled them to believe all such nonsense that they are ready to sell out all their fortunes for getting their children admitted to such schools, even when the school management represented through  flashy principals or flashy sharp tongued lady teachers might insult them in so many ways ! They perhaps know and understand all these, but have now gained the boorshwazee mindset that they cannot possibly admit that !

So the clever 'weavers' of the public school education system keep exploiting them. In cities like the Delhi and its suburbs, these public schools  managed by societies and trusts of 'eminent' boorshwazee, but effectively controlled by shrewd businessmen who are more interested in money making than imparting education to the children of the locality, are effectively used to extract more than half of the household income of the young middle class parents for preparing their child for this kind of 'public school' education. Such looting by these schools have made these young working class parents with recenably good incomes so scared that many of them are not comfortable to have another baby in the household. But whether it is the school management or the parents, the mindset is boorshwazee that none of them can possibly ever admit the truth ! The simple truth that these schools do not impart any worthy education that justify the money they extract ! None of them can possibly raise the question on the money these school managements routinely collect from them as capitation fees, tuition fee and many other such fees. I was surprised to learn that some of these schools clandestinely collect admission fee amounting to the tune of Rs.200,000/- or more for admitting  a child to the nursery (kindergarten ) level class besides taking thousands of rupees as monthly fees !

The looters and the looted both belong to the boorshwazee class of neo-India ! So, if you are one, you would never ever make any hue and cry about this. You might well ridicule me publicly for writing this ! Even when you silently cry within yourself  or willing to share your woes to me privately.

Being a boorshwazee, you would never ever dare to tell your boss, friend or neighbour about any wrong that they knowingly or unknowingly do. Instead, you are likely to praise them always. You do not want to displease any one any time forsaking your comforts and possible advantages.

The boorshwazee always want to be with the majority. So you would like to be with the party in power or the majority of your vicinity who happen to oppose the party in power !

You try to develop a liking to the game of cricket when the majority around you exhibit themselves as cricket fans, even when you like the game of football more. But unfortunately, you fail to recognize the boorshwazee mindset of all others around you which made them fans of cricket like you ! That is the all pervading power of the boorshwazee mindset.

In the government various committees are set up to decide on various issues like award of contracts, framing rules, etc. The most powerful one would be the chairman of such committees. If he or she has some vested interests, he or she could easily make the rest of the committee members agree to his or her wish regardless of any guidelines or rules or statutes that are in vogue. Because, they are all with typical boorshwazee mindset and with that mindset they would be the last one to raise their voices against those in power or against the majority.

There are several such examples and I do not want to elaborate all those.

My theory about the growth of boorshwazee mindset in any society is this: A developing nation is bound to have a higher percentage of boorswhazee among its population, the percentage would decline once the nation achieves the developed status.

Social evils, inequality and societal problems would be on a rising trend in a developing nation whose boorshwazee percentage also is also rising with the material development.

If you are with the boorswhazee mindset, it would be of great achievement to you if you could consciously take such mental exercises that could help you to  shed your boorshwazee mindset.

Remember, the lesser percentage of the people with boorshwazee mindset  in the society, the more developed it is !

Do not be part of the crowd that would make the rulers of your country parade naked in public just as the emperor of the Anderson story !

[Read the blogs of Dr Jeevan Kuruvilla here- The Learner ]
